A perennial plant is one which lives for more than two years, as opposed to annual plants which survive only one year or growing season. The term "Perennials" typically applies to winter-hardy herbaceous plants in a specific climate zone. Some plants may be perennial in some warmer zones, but only annuals in the colder climate zones. Perennials grow and bloom over the warmer seasons of spring of summer, and then die back in the cooler seasons of autumn and winter. They return the next growing season by using the nutrients built-up in their roots during the past growing season(s).
